Protection of livestock farming and large carnivores in Europe (debate)
Mr President, after those very clear words of Commissioner Lenarčič – thank you very much for them – I would like to address those who want to introduce changes in the Habitats Directive or its annexes. The amendments are not justified from both a conservative and a legal point of view. The Habitat Directive does not envisage any rule or automatic mechanism according to which as soon as a species achieves favourable conservation status, its protection status would be lowered. Because if you applied that logic, the species would decline rapidly again, and all the effort to protect it and all the public money spent on that would have to start from scratch again. And this doesn’t seem very logical. Some species are subject to a very high level of human-caused mortality, especially because of poaching. So colleagues, as we know, and we just heard it, the existing possibility under Article 16 of the Habitats Directive to manage wolf and bear populations is necessary. The Commission guidelines need to be clarified, Commissioner, and this is also in our resolution, so please vote for it with no amendments. It includes most of our expectations.
The need for a European solution on asylum and migration including search and rescue (debate)
Mr President, not a long time ago, someone who moved on our continent from country to country was a migrant, a stranger. But even someone who moved, say, from Hessen to Bavaria and had a different accent, wore different clothes, ate Handkäse mit Musik and not white sausage with sweet mustard, was a migrant, was a stranger. This has changed. Today, migrants we call those who come on our continent from different continents. But also this will change. I’m sorry that we heard so many times in this debate words like smugglers, invasion, danger, costs, mafias, etc. Dear colleagues, led by fears and xenophobia we will never cope well with migrations. And the question: is a person who is drowning in the sea illegal? A person who is freezing to death in the forests and swamps between Poland and Belarus: is this person illegal? Nobody should die at our European borders. This is the most important.
Countering the anti-European and anti-Ukrainian propaganda of Putin’s European cronies (topical debate)
Mr President, it’s good that at last we are starting to treat this aspect of the war completely seriously. It’s encouraging to see the determination of Minister Bek and of Commissioner Schinas and the activities presented, but we need them not as words – we really need them as facts. I would like to quote the numbers evoked here already by Guy Verhofstadt. Out of 6 676 names identified by the Navalny Foundation as a propaganda machine, 135 were proposed for sanctions and only six were sanctioned – only six were sanctioned. Facebook identified 60 disinformation sites. They hid under the names and visualisation of well—known media like The Guardian, Der Spiegel, Bild. They used false profiles, false accounts in seven languages. I remember when Barack Obama, proud about the US IT companies, declared ‘the internet is ours’. But it is Putin who successfully uses it as a war tool... (The President cut off the speaker)
Russia’s escalation of its war of aggression against Ukraine (debate)
Mr President, colleagues, Putin, in fact, is what we witness in this very room. We were never as united as during this debate. And this unity from one debate to another is more and more visible. Even Alexandr Vondra was positive this time. There are, of course, some shameful exceptions, but they are not even worth mentioning them. The determination of our leaders to support Ukraine is also more clear from day to day, week to week, month to month than what we heard from Roberta Metsola, Josep Borrell, Ursula von der Leyen is one voice or the voices that complete each other. Member States, citizens, we all must follow. It is not even those words. It is not only words because they became facts, actions or very clear plans for the future and of such a European Union, I am really proud. Only so, by strengthening our policies, we strengthen also our sovereignty. Not only we need to be sovereign, but also Ukraine needs a strong, united, sovereign ready to pay the price, because we know that otherwise the price will be much higher.
Radio Equipment Directive: common charger for electronic devices (debate)
Madam President, Commissioner, dear colleagues, one could say, ‘One charger? Big deal!’, but this one will positively mark our everyday life. Because big projects like the common market consist of small bricks, sometimes very important bricks. And this one common charger is one such important element of our common market. As we all know, it was not easy. It took some time. I also campaigned for this common charger for many years. Now finally we have it. We achieved a solution which will facilitate consumers’ lives, and it will help the environment. So it is time for thanks. First, Commissioner Thierry Breton, who demonstrated political courage and came up with a legislative proposal after many years of the Commission being too patient with IT equipment manufacturers. The Commission followed calls coming from us, from the European Parliament and from the European citizens: thank you. Thank you to Alex Saliba and the other colleagues – other shadows, especially – who cooperated on this big project, which is one of the bricks of the common market. Big thanks for working together so well and helping make the proposal of the Commission even more ambitious. We managed to expand its scope and cover more almost twice as many product categories as were initially proposed. And now the common charger will really have an impact on the comfort of our lives, and what is probably most important to me and millions of other citizens is that we will decrease the use of raw materials. There will be less e-waste, I think, by thousands, if not millions of tonnes, and we will give our fellow citizens a chance – which you also underlined – to choose whether you want to buy a new device with a charger or without a charger. And this we always enjoy – choice. So enjoy, and thank you!
Ecological Disaster in the Oder River (debate)
Madam President, I'm sorry. Dear Commissioner, You mentioned those 200 tons of dead fish in the Oder. Imagine that. That's about the weight of the Statue of Liberty. So many dead fish have been caught from the Oder by those who clean, work and count it. Two months have passed, and we still do not have information about what really happened, who these perpetrators are, what they are and what will be the effects of this disaster on the environment of those countries that have been mentioned, on the health of people who live closer and further away from the Oder. Commissioner, let us be honest, this catastrophe is not caused, as we often hear, by natural causes. This is another lie of the government, which has been silent, even though four years ago it was warned about the catastrophic impact of polluted waters flowing to the Oder. Since then, nothing has changed, even after in February this year the European Commission launched an infringement procedure against the Polish government, for insufficient control of discharges of pollutants into our rivers, for failing to implement the so-called wastewater directive. It is a pity that Commissioner Sinkevičius is not with us today, because he is responsible for protecting the environment. And I would like to ask him whether he works closely enough with NGOs, whether he listens to the voice of experts, whistleblowers who defend the environment, whether he treats them with due attention and seriousness, whether he uses their knowledge, their experience? If he did, many of his questions would have been answered today. We need to thank civil society: anglers, firefighters, volunteers, who in this crisis situation saved the health and lives of people and saved our common river. But, Commissioner, what's next? It is very depressing that we have to turn here to you, colleagues, that we have to turn to the European Commission to protect the goods that our own government should care about. However, we are dealing with an environmental crime and we need a proper investigation so that it never happens again. And we cannot rely on the Polish government administration, which shifts the blame for the disaster to others, provides unreliable information. After all, those who are aware of the threat and those that are still ahead of us are waiting for the European Commission to act. Madam President, let me have one more word. We are waiting for such activity of the European Commission as we saw when rescuing Białowieża. Because we are still witnessing destruction, such as the excavation of the Vistula Spit, the extension of the emissions from Turów. And we are waiting for actions, for facts from the environment, so that actions for the protection of the environment are really concrete.
Surveillance and predator spyware systems in Greece (debate)
The striking thing to me is the way how our colleagues from the ruling Greek party, from the EPP, argue and how similar it is to the arguments of the Polish ruling party, from the ECR, when such things occur, namely that we act against the country. I wanted to ask if you are stricken by it: that we act against Greece, that we want to destabilise Greece – exactly the same arguments as I hear from perpetrators, from those who are using the bugging system and breaking the law in Poland. I wanted to ask you if it also strikes you or only me?
Surveillance and predator spyware systems in Greece (debate)
Mr President, thank you very much. The testimonies of Greek journalists who were spied on with Predator are remarkably similar to what happened in Poland with Pegasus. Parallels are obvious: spying on journalists, politicians, including the head of the opposition party's election campaign, prosecutors initiating inconvenient proceedings for the government. It's all alike. The difference is that high Greek officials attended the Commission meeting and Polish officials – Mr Ziobro or Mr Kamiński – refused to participate. They eavesdrop on the rulers who want to help themselves stay in power, win the next election, silence journalists, convince the public that everything is totally OK. And they do it so that the world does not learn about corruption, about their destruction of the state, which they do themselves. We are striving to clarify this matter in depth and I very much hope for close and good cooperation with the European Commission, because we must secure our European societies from such a sneaky attack on democracy.
The rule of law and the potential approval of the Polish national Recovery Plan (RRF) (debate)
Mr President, thank you very much. The fact that there are such turbulent debates about Poland in the European Parliament shows how important our country is to you, dear colleagues. The fact that we demanded a meeting with the President after she was in Warsaw and signed the National Recovery Plan together with Prime Minister Morawiecki shows that compliance with the law throughout the European Union is extremely important for us, colleagues, the Commission, Rado. Citizens, local governments, non-governmental organisations, businesses, health services and others need these Community funds. Yes, it is true, but I would like to remind you of such a small thing, we fought against the authoritarian government that occupied us in Poland for decades, we fought for membership in the community in which we are, in the European Union, because it guarantees us the rule of law, democracy, it guarantees us freedom. The European Union guarantees us the observance of the law, free media, guarantees us the separation of powers, guarantees us free courts. As you can see, our Polish democratic institutions are still young and still not sufficiently resistant to the attacks of those who destroy them. All the more important is our community of values, community of values, community of the rule of law. And you are her guardian, Madam President, that is what we expect and demand from you. Frau Präsidentin! Verzeihen Siem mein miserables Deutsch, aber wir wissen alle, wohin es führt, wenn wir weich und tolerant gegenüber autoritären Regierungen sind, gegen Regierungen, die unsere gemeinsamen Abkommen und Regeln brechen. Madam President, I could just sign everything that was said, including with what you ... I agree fully with what you said, Commissioner, only, as Robert Biedroń has just mentioned, why wait? All the points, all the breaches were committed. You know about it very well. You knew before the wall was being built that it was coming and then nothing was undertaken. Then the situation is really dramatic. We have discussed it already several times from the point of view of human rights – those miserable people who are held outside of the European Union, dying in those forests. From the perspective of nature preservation, which is being brutally destroyed, probably this picture is too small, but this wall is.... (The President invited the speaker to remove the photo she was showing) Okay, I put it down. But see in the Internet, you will see much more tragic pictures, really, of this destruction of the most beautiful and precious monument of nature. But what is maybe the worst is that the European Commission, in which we trust and which we want to be strong and fulfil its duty, namely to be the guardian of the Treaties and our laws in the European Union, doesn’t fulfil its duties, and there are I don’t know how many laws being broken, environmental laws that are being broken now through the construction of this horrible, useless, as you have said, wall: the Habitats Directive, Birds Directive, Charter of Human Rights, Articles 18 to 21, Treaty on the EU, of course, Article 2, etc. And in addition to that, apart from this destruction, the horrible symbolic meaning of walls in Europe in the 21st century, the non-acting of the European Commission – we write letters, we never receive answers, the last letter I signed was written two months ago, I never received any answer – in addition to that, it’s utterly useless because it is so miserably built this wall that it destroys the environment but people dig holes underneath and they managed to come and escape their misery, maybe, maybe thank God. But we will surely hear immediately representatives of the members of the party ruling in Poland that will say that the fence is broken, protects us against Putin and against invasion from Russia, and I don’t know if we should cry or laugh about such arguments, because really, if fences protected us against invaders like Putin, then life would be very easy. But life is much more complicated. What we need is action by the European Commission. Please do act, Commissioner, I say it on your hands because you are here.
Use of the Pegasus Software by EU Member States against individuals including MEPs and the violation of fundamental rights (topical debate)
Mr President, thank you very much. Failure to respond to crimes is participation in these crimes. And all indications are that the privacy of the citizens of the European Union has been destroyed. Human rights have been violated in this way. That is why we, Renew Europe Poland 2050, reacted immediately. And it is very good that we have received such broad support in the European Parliament and that the special committee on the illegal use of Pegasus has already become operational. Commissioner Hahn has just told us that the Commission will be watching very closely the work of this special committee, but I call for active participation in our work in this committee. And I must admit, Commissioner, that I am surprised that, to our knowledge, the Commission has known for a long time that Commissioners and high officials were being eavesdropped on, and somehow there has been no public conversation about it. We demand transparency and transparency here, because the security of citizens is absolutely essential for all of us. And this Pegasus device was created precisely to defend citizens against serious crimes, against terrorists, and not so that authoritarian governments, and perhaps others, eavesdrop on politicians, prosecutors, social activists, business representatives, journalists, MEPs and commissioners, in short, all who are or may be uncomfortable for authoritarian governments, and perhaps others. Special services, the police and other state bodies must be subject to control, but such control is only possible if the separation of powers, the independence of the judiciary, the independence of the courts and the prosecutor's office are fully guaranteed.
Right to repair (debate)
Madam President, I'm sorry. Commissioner, I'm sorry. That's bad news. I have three juicers at home, because two have some minor defects that either cannot be fixed or are not worth it. And so we are constantly forced to buy new devices. On average, a European produces almost 16 kilograms of e-waste per year, and we have been demanding a well-functioning right to repair for a long time. What is the right to repair? That is, on the one hand, the obligation to produce equipment in such a way that repair is possible and cost-effective for the consumer, and spare parts are available for an appropriate period of time on the market, and, on the other hand, such information for the consumer, which he understands, with clear instructions that indicate the possibility of using numerous repair points. And consumers, when choosing a product in the store, should also be able not only to compare the price and quality of the product, but also to repair this product. So I am very pleased that the European Commission has responded so positively to our calls and is taking concrete action to rectify the situation. Thank you so much for that. Cooperation and similarities between the Putin regime and extreme right and separatist movements in Europe (topical debate)
Madam President, like many of us in this Chamber, I also grew up behind the Iron Curtain. Most of my youth I spent struggling against a political system – call it communist or socialist – that used more or less the same practices as Putin practices in Russia: terror, fear, lies, election fraud, corruption, instrumentalisation of the judiciary and the like. Add to this constant anti—capitalist, anti—Western Europe propaganda and your picture is more or less complete. We ripped down the Iron Curtain, introduced the three-way partition of powers, free market, joined the EU, and I was confident that we had won once and forever. But hardly a few years passed and a right—wing government was elected, and just like my Hungarian friends, also we must struggle again for a free media and for a free judiciary. We struggle again for equality in the elections, against political corruption and the like. Add to this the propaganda which makes enemies of our Western neighbours, including the European Union, and your picture is more or less complete. It is really difficult to differentiate between left or right wing authoritarian regimes. So be careful!
EU Protection of children and young people fleeing the war against Ukraine (debate)
Mr President, it’s good that such a vast majority present in this room agrees. I host three children and minors from eastern Ukraine for over a month now. They are accompanied. They go to Polish schools and kindergarten. They are in our warm and safe home and still, the three-year-old Arturczyk tells me with wide open eyes ‘Why are they shooting at my daddy? You know, bad people, evil people are shooting at my daddy. Why?’ Scars will remain. And yes, we all must undertake all that is possible to make them bearable and to put an end to this horror. Commissioner Dubravka Šuica stressed that all children have a right to a happy and normal childhood: all. So let us struggle for all of them. The prolongation of the Ukrainian—Polish border is the border between Poland and Belarus. It’s the same line. It is also our Schengen border, and there, in the forests and swamps, for months already families with children are pushed back, mistreated, freezing, starving, dying. Their only fault is that they are from Central Asia, most of them. Those volunteers who struggle to save their lives, are not awarded with high distinctions but are accused of human trafficking. The prosecution demanded their arrest. Please, let us not divide humans. Let us not divide children into categories. Please remember also those at the Belarusian border.
Rising energy prices and market manipulation on the gas market (debate)
Mr President, thank you very much. Ladies and Gentlemen! We're worried about gas prices, and there's a terrible war going on right next to us. Putin's murder of Ukrainians takes place to a large extent with our money and the situation is really dramatic. Heroic Ukrainians often pay the highest price. We must help them with all available methods, because they are also fighting for our values and on our behalf. And that means we have to be willing to bear the costs, too. War is not comfortable. Those costs are already there. Bills are growing across the EU, and not because of green policy, because it makes us independent of Putin. They will grow even more because we cannot continue to finance the Russian criminal regime. We need a plan to completely abandon the purchase of resources from Russia. Maybe temporarily, maybe only until the end of the war, but we must immediately impose a full embargo on raw materials from Russia. Today's Commission proposals are a first step. We need to build further on them, but at the same time we need to protect the weakest, with this solidarity with Ukraine, to protect the oldest on our continent, for whom the costs of solidarity with Ukrainians may be unbearable.
The deterioration of the situation of refugees as a consequence of the Russian aggression against Ukraine (debate)
Mr President, when I was leaving for Strasbourg, I left at home, with my mother and with my husband, 11 Ukrainian refugees, mothers and children. They speak Russian. They are from eastern Ukraine and they are bombarded by Russians. They are traumatised. They are tired. They believe that they can return home, or to what was their home, in a few weeks – and yet there are more and more and more refugees coming. They asked me to thank you all, and via you the citizens of Europe, for your support, solidarity and involvement. I believe, and I do hope that more and more people will understand that there are no better or worse wars, better or worse refugees. I am thinking here about those who are dying in the cold forests at the Belarussian—Polish border. We must not forget them now, as we think about the crimes that Putin commits in Ukraine. We have shown our unity and potential in these last days. I trust that we can do more and that we shall do more to save lives and guarantee peace.
The Rule of Law and the consequences of the ECJ ruling (debate)
Madam President, as the money from the recovery fund is not flowing to the Polish Government, suddenly they have started drafting proposals that claim to solve the situation. Frankly speaking, those proposals are worth nothing, but they claim to fulfil the Court of Justice’s rulings. They don’t! But at least they seem to understand that this issue is serious. After today’s ruling, all depends on the European Commission’s decisions. Only our European institutions can now stop the degradation of the Union of rule of law. And please, this is not a conflict between the European Union and Poland. No, the standard of independence of the judiciary is identical in the Polish Constitution, in the European Treaties and in the European Convention on Human Rights. It is a conflict where on one side we have the European Union and the Polish Constitution, and on the other we have the Polish Government. It’s not a conflict between the European Union and the Polish Constitution, it’s a conflict where on the one side we have the Polish Constitution and European law, and on the other we have the Polish Government. And today in opinion polls in Poland, 60% of those questioned support conditionality. To finish, it is for all of us a success that we have a good instrument to protect the European citizens from those who destroy their access to independent justice. But please, Commission, do not fail the trust that those citizens put in you.
Situation in Kazakhstan
Thank you very much, Mr President, and I congratulate you very much on your choice. Mr President, maybe I will switch into English. This is not my lengthy speech. This is a list of political prisoners in Kazakhstan – of human rights defenders persecuted for political reasons. There are numerous of names. This list is much longer today after the crackdown on the peaceful demonstrations that recently took place in Kazakhstan. People in over 60 cities went to the streets, first because of price increases, but it quickly developed into protests against the cruel regime in Kazakhstan. Hundreds were killed, excessive are in prisons, and many are being tortured. Why is that? Because they struggle for the same values and for the same freedoms which unite most of us in this House and in the European Union. How is it possible that we sign the enhanced partnership and cooperation agreement, but we hardly react when basic human rights are being trampled in the most brutal manner? Where is any activity from the European External Action Service? I see Commissioner that you are now taking over all functions in the European Commission. Our mailboxes are flooded by fake news and propaganda coming from official Kazakh authorities, but we, in this House, get two hours to prepare a resolution on those terrible events, and this resolution should not exceed five pages. We wanted, in this resolution, to describe the terrible situation of the citizens in Kazakhstan and demand sanctions against the Kazakh authorities, despite the fact that the resolution is too short and doesn’t describe the situation achieved due to lack of time and space, which is a shame in fact. I must ask you all to vote for this resolution; call out for personal sanctions against those who are responsible for the crimes committed against the people of Kazakhstan.
Digital Services Act (continuation of debate)
Mr President, thank you very much. Madam Vice-President, I'm sorry. Mr. Commissioner, I'm sorry. Christel! The Digital Services Act is about taking away the power of digital giants over our data. But it is not about giving this power to authoritarian governments and institutions dependent on them. That is why we are setting the rules of the game for content moderation – and I can hear clearly in this room that not everyone likes it. Well, that's hard. This regulation is about us being able to decide for ourselves what we want to see on the Internet, about corporations not fueling fear for profit, as it is currently happening, not causing a wave of hate or spreading disinformation that can threaten health or even life. It's about not being followed without our explicit consent. It is about not being able to use our sensitive data to build trauma algorithms. To absolutely protect the youngest from ads tracking them. But it is also about ensuring fair competition in the market and giving European start-ups and small businesses a chance to collide with Europe's tech giants. And that's why we impose incomparably greater obligations on these big companies. This is right and extremely important, because these large companies have a much greater responsibility. The impact on how our common digital space looks is much greater on their side.
An EU ban on the use of wild animals in circuses (debate)
Madam President, I'm sorry. So far, only three European countries have completely banned the use of animals in circuses: Bravo to Malta, Cyprus and Greece! But there are also such strange categories as the prohibition of the use of dangerous animals, which does not apply to non-hazardous animals, and thus camels and llamas, for example, can be tired because they do not have sharp fangs or terrible claws. Commissioner, do not hide behind the responsibilities of the Member States. Protecting the environment is our common policy. We are jointly responsible for it. These animals belong to nature. They are part of the environment and we are jointly responsible for them. So please prepare proposals for a law banning the use of at least these wild animals in circuses, and preferably all of them. You've heard opinions in this room. We hear the opinions of the majority of the citizens of the European Union. Such a proposal will be very widely supported, so go ahead, European Commission!
The proposed Council decision on provisional emergency measures for the external border with Belarus based on article 78(3) TFEU (continuation of debate)
Madam President, I have the impression that you cannot imagine the situation at the border when you speak about it, when you speak about the ambitions, etc. I never thought that it is our ambition to let people die of cold, hunger or anxiety in a cold forest. I never thought that we could just watch and wish each other a merry Christmas when people who come to our borders for help are sent back, hunted by dogs, beaten by people in uniform. These people are being used as a missile by this dictator of Europe, Lukashenko, who, Commissioner, is not the last dictator, because there are new emerging dictators who are very eager to develop, unfortunately. We received an appeal from 60 professors from many world universities. I quote a bit of this appeal: ‘The decision of the Council is a threat to all European citizens. Supporting the illegal measures of authoritarian governments gives them a free hand to establish lawless zones on their territory. The European Union, founded on the law and the defence of fundamental rights, cannot trample on their respect and risk denying itself. The future of the EU is being played out today in the Białowieża Forest. We ask the Council of the European Union to renounce the legalisation of these derogations from Treaties protecting human rights.’ To finish, Madam President, there are NGOs in this forest who struggle to deliver help to those people who are dying there, and they are appealing to us. Security does not exclude humanity, and a safe European border is one where nobody has to die.
Plans to undermine further fundamental rights in Poland, in particular regarding the standards of the European Convention of Human Rights and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (debate)
Madam President, I'm sorry. When this inhumane verdict, which we are talking about here, was passed, one of the judges of the Constitutional Court, Prof. Leon Kieres, gave a dissenting opinion. I would like to quote some of his basic thoughts to show once again that this pseudo-judgment of this pseudo-tribunal is incompatible with the Polish Constitution. The Constitution does not provide for the right to life. It is a natural law, a natural law, which the State neither can give nor can take away. The law, unlike morality or religion, should not oblige heroism and formulate requirements that go beyond the usual measure, i.e. requirements that are impossible for the average addressee of these regulations to meet. The Constitution requires and appreciates heroism only in the public dimension, in conditions of war, even at the cost of sacrificing one's life. But here, after all, it is not about war, because in the private dimension the Polish Constitution ensures freedom of conscience, ensures freedom of religion and the right to decide about personal life. And the role of the state is to leave decisions to those directly affected. People who will experience the effects of these decisions throughout their lives. Thanking my colleagues for their solidarity, I would like to stress once again: There is no conflict between European law and the Polish Constitution. This is a conflict in which on one side there is European law and the Polish constitution, and on the other side there is a Polish government that violates the law and violates the Polish constitution.
Outcome of the COP26 in Glasgow (debate)
Mr President, thank you very much. I listened to all 61 people who performed before me, and many of them are still waiting for this one minute. And behind me is the chairman with that terrible hammer, so this whole situation is pretty stressful. We are talking about life and death. So I would like to address only those who complain that the COP in Glasgow did not have an ambitious enough outcome, that it should be more ambitious. We must have the strong support of an active and conscious society in order to achieve more. They bear the costs of past political mistakes, but they also bear the limitations and costs associated with the fight against warming. They are the actor in this process and we must guarantee them a democratic and solidarity-based transition. This process cannot be dominated by fear, which is the worst possible advisor and is abhorrently exploited by short-sighted populists. We must replace fear with the conviction that it is worth it and that we will meet this challenge. Let me quote Professor Geremek: ‘There were no such lumps before us.’ And we'll be fine.
Situation in Belarus and at its border with the EU and the security and humanitarian consequences (debate)
Madam President, I'm sorry. Many of us focus exclusively on the humanitarian drama on the Belarusian-Polish or Belarusian-EU border. This conflict at the border is very good for Lukashenko, because it distracts attention from the crimes he commits against the citizens of Belarus. And there are more political prisoners in Belarus today than in Russia, and no European leader at any meeting can silence the crimes of the criminal Lukashenka regime. We must not talk either about the situation on the border, or about terror, the violation of fundamental rights inside Belarus, because it is not or, it is the sum, the sum of the victims of Lukashenko supported by Putin. The victims are citizens of Belarus or other countries, brought to this border. And I'm asking: Is there anyone else who does not understand that only by observing the common European law together, that only this European community can stop these cruel madmen?
The escalating humanitarian crisis on the EU-Belarusian border, in particular in Poland (debate)
Madam President, I'm sorry. I will only speak Polish at the beginning and I switch to English, ladies and gentlemen, because our Polish eastern border is the border of the whole European Union and what is happening there – I agree with everyone whose opinion is that, and I share that opinion – is a matter for the whole European Union. And only together with the European Union can we solve this problem. We cannot live in a world where security excludes humanity, where we have a choice between security and humanity. People are dying on the eastern border of the European Union. We must stop this madness of Lukashenko all together, so we need more sanctions. As you know, dictators understand the language of power and of money, so sanctions against those persons who are responsible, but also against the economic interests of this very regime. And we need closer cooperation. I look at today’s opinion—polls from Poland. The question was: should the Polish Government ask the European Union for help in solving this humanitarian crisis? 82% of respondents say ‘yes’, 15% say ‘no’, and 3% have ‘no opinion’. So, my question to the Prime Minister of Poland Mr Morawiecki is: Why, Mr Prime Minister Morawiecki, are you, again, against the Polish citizens? Why do you refuse to invite Frontex to the eastern European border, to our border? What is your real motivation? We must act together.
