Watch

Madam President, Madam President of the Commission! Mr President-in-Office of the Council! Ladies and gentlemen, ladies and gentlemen! The offer of an associated partnership with Canada, which goes far beyond a free trade agreement, is a very clear and strong commitment, which I very much welcome. It shows that we Europeans are reliable partners in the world and that we in the world also have reli…

Urgent measures to strengthen the competitiveness and safeguard quality jobs in the EU’s automotive sector (debate)

Watch

Madam President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen! For the first time, China's car imports into the European Union exceed European exports to the People's Republic. 250 000 jobs have already been lost in the automotive industry; More than 100,000 jobs are at stake. Jobs are migrating abroad, and investments in research and development are also going abroad. The situation is really dramatic, but …

DE Answer

Preparation of the European Council (joint debate)

Watch

Madam, thank you very much for the question. I think that the more Member States are admitted into the European Union, the more we need to revise and revise our Treaties. And there is exactly the question of how we deal with veto rights here, one of the central questions, but for me it is crucial that we finally check correctly again here at the next recording round: How do we, as the European Uni…

Thank you, Mr President, also for your understanding. Commissioner, Member of the Council, ladies and gentlemen! I would like to talk about Europe's relationship with China; This is one of the important issues on the agenda for the summit. I think the most important thing is that we in Europe must not be naïve, but must make use of our opportunities and adapt to the new challenges. China is a diff…

Cutting red tape to enable a competitive and clean transition – the urgent need to shorten and simplify permitting (debate)

Watch

Mr President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, ladies and gentlemen, An entrepreneur who fills out forms for hours and waits years for approvals can neither focus on his core business nor implement his projects. Too long approval procedures rob time, cost money and slow down innovation. In my home country alone, in Germany, companies incur around five billion euros in bureaucracy costs every ye…

Madam President, Madam Vice-President, ladies and gentlemen! India is the largest democracy in the world with 1.4 billion people. India is the fourth largest economy in the world, and we Europeans share many common values and interests with India. Madam President, Madam Vice-President, ladies and gentlemen! What happens if our networks fail? When communication is no longer possible? When no data arrives? In a connected world, the answer is clear: Then our society stands still. This is precisely why our networks need to become safer, faster and more resilient. Watch

Madam President, Commissioner! Ladies and gentlemen, ladies and gentlemen! The next summit is a historic one. Are we as a European Union capable of acting? Do we live up to our historical responsibility? I think that's what this summit is all about. I appeal to the Heads of State and Government to make themselves aware of this responsibility for the European project and not to think nationally, an…

Presentation of the automotive package (debate)

Madam President, Commissioner! Ladies and Gentlemen! Dear colleagues! The Commission has adopted the CO2-legislation opened, including for heavy-duty traffic. That, in my opinion, is a good message. But does the proposal really provide for technology neutrality? Does it really secure jobs in Europe? In my home country, Bavaria alone, more than 350,000 people work in the automotive and supplier ind…

Europe’s automotive future – reversing the ban on the sale of combustion cars in the EU (topical debate)

Watch

Mr President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen. The ban on new cars from 2035 is a dead end – a dead end linked to massive job cuts, the flooding of the market with Chinese vehicles and the death of an entire industry. In Germany alone, in my home country, we lost 50,000 jobs in the automotive industry last year. If you believe the forecasts of what I am doing, then the situation will be that by…

A unified EU response to unjustified US trade measures and global trade opportunities for the EU (debate)

Watch

Mr President, Mr Vice-President, Mr Minister, ladies and gentlemen! U.S. tariffs hit our companies to the mark. The United States is our most important trading partner, and many jobs here in the European Union depend on exports. If the US administration unilaterally imposes unwarranted tariffs and ultimately declares customs war on us, we must act decisively and, above all, together. I think that …

Madam President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, ladies and gentlemen, Europe is an autocontinent. The European automotive and supply industry is one of our core industries in the economy.
