Protecting children’s safety and mental health from the risks posed by social media – our duty to act now (debate)
Madam President, Imagine that a child opens an app only briefly. The algorithm has only one goal: maximum length of stay, maximum profit. Like a pull, it draws children and sometimes adults deeper and deeper into echo chambers, where they only hear what they want to hear and believe what the algorithm shows them. Emotional, extreme content is rewarded, facts, nuances, doubts are buried. The algorithm knows: Anger lasts longer than reason, fear scrolls further than truth. And while children in rabbit holes Disappearing and adults being locked up in rage bubbles through hatred and hate speech, the platforms are slashing billions. Genuine child protection starts with the design itself: no infinite feeds that use exhaustion as a feature; No algorithms or systems to be addictive. Instead of mere age verification, we need effective enforcement of our laws and respect for democratic values. Those who do not respect this must not simply continue to operate in the European market.
