Political prisoners in Nicaragua – the cases of Carlos Brenes, Salvadora del Socorro Martínez Aburto and Brooklyn Rivera
Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, I knew Brooklyn Rivera in 1985 in the maquis of Nicaragua during the civil war. He was the historical and charismatic warlord of Misurasata, the movement of the people of the Miskito Indians, persecuted and displaced by the communist dictatorship of Daniel Ortega, against which they led a guerrilla war. He was a brave man, and we had become friends. I had welcomed him, the tireless defender of his people’s cause, to Paris, opening the doors to him for a humanitarian tour. In 2023, he denounced to the UN the abuses committed against his people by the Managua dictatorship. Rancunier, Daniel Ortega made him disappear and languish in his jails, where he died in circumstances that remain to be clarified. UN experts refer to enforced disappearance as an international crime. On behalf of the Patriots for Europe, I call for truth and justice for my friend Brooklyn Rivera and his fellow prisoners.
