The resilience of the European transport sector and the need to ensure the supply of essential goods amid ongoing geopolitical instability (debate)
Mr President, fellow Members, Commissioner, European resilience today is threatened not only by geopolitics, but also by our myopia. We are letting the freight railroad, the backbone of supply and industry in Europe die, even though it is it that can help us secure the supply of fuels, food and key raw materials in a crisis. On paper and in political proclamations, we have been promising to shift freight from roads to tracks for decades. The reality? The share of railroads continues to decline. At the same time, it offers us low dependence on oil, the lowest emissions and high energy efficiency. At the Council of Transport Ministers, a common non-paper on rail freight transport was presented by the Czech Minister with the words: ‘Cargo no vote, no vote.” Let us join this initiative. Let's be the voice of the freight railroad. Let's take part in the revival and modernisation of the freight railway with priority awarding of railway capacity, targeted funding and fair conditions towards the road. It will be better and safer for everyone.
