Importance of consent-based rape legislation in the EU (debate)

We are committed to effectively protecting victims and promoting prevention measures, but these efforts can only be effective if the necessary measures are tailored to the socio-legal specificities of each Member State at national level. A unified, centralised approach ignores national, cultural and legal differences that are key to genuine assistance. We are concerned that the left is trying to i…

Recommendation on EU-China political relations (debate)

Watch

High energy prices in Europe, overregulation of businesses are not hypotheticals. They are not theoretic. They were all featured in the Draghi report two years ago, on which we delivered almost nothing. How do we expect to have more European competitiveness economically if we are saying that you do not actually need to change any of the rules that we already have? We need to undo red tape, we need…

Recommendation on EU-China political relations (debate)

I think we agree. That is the argument I was making: we need to have a strong European economy. It is through cheap energy, through lower regulations, etc., that we allow private investors to invest more in Europe so that it is not the European Union who has to spend more or the states that need to spend more on new technology and on research and development. But if we have business‑friendly rules…

There was no question, but let me tell you something. I understand that for many people, the green marketing of the last decade is very strong and has its effect. The truth is, when there was the race for nuclear weapons and nuclear technology, the only thing that matters was who gets it first. The same competition goes on in other technologies, including now with AI and that technology. Whoever i…

China is investing everything it can in getting cheap energy and getting all the resources it needs to develop its industry and its economy. It's what it's doing. We are limiting ourselves ideologically, based on what kind of energy we want, what kind of manufacturing we want, whether it's sustainable or not. If you listen to any of the AI speeches of the European Commission or many people in this…

Recommendation on EU-China political relations (debate)

Dear Madam President, It is absurd that part of the European Parliament expects China to solve Europe's problems. Let's look at the facts. China's GDP is almost equal to that of the EU. The scissors have been steadily closed for the past 15 years. China has cheaper electricity, more industrial robots, more new AI investments and patents. And what hurts Europe the most today: The share of Chinese c…

You've raised several issues which deal with generally how we're going to apply AI. Of course it touches on software engineers as well. That's why I argued in favour of public procurement, because private investment is not happening in AI or not sufficiently in Europe. That's why we should have massive public procurement. To suck up also the engineers, we should incentivise software engineers and …

Mr President, the European Commission's response to the rise of AI and related cybersecurity challenges is disappointing, to say the least, including the new action plan. When the US learned that Germany was building a nuclear weapon, it understood that it must do the same. In fact, it understood that it must win the race. When the first atomic bomb was built, others were rushing to catch up. Thos…

And the Commissioner is also saying that the automotive sector is in mortal danger. But only ten years ago, we h…

Achieving digital sovereignty and resilience for Europe, in light of recent developments affecting access to advanced AI technologies (debate)

Mr President, when it comes to digital sovereignty and innovation in the digital sector, the EU is lagging far behind the United States and increasingly behind China, too. And this has been the case for very long now. In Europe, we lack enough software and hardware engineers, chip manufacturing is limited, expensive energy makes investing in data centres in Europe unattractive, and so does overreg…
