Political prisoners in Nicaragua – the cases of Carlos Brenes, Salvadora del Socorro Martínez Aburto and Brooklyn Rivera
Madam President, arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances and deaths in custody, that is the pattern of repression used by the Ortega and Murillo regime against the Nicaraguan people. Today about 46 political prisoners are still deprived of their liberty, while many of their relatives, who are being persecuted to silence their pain, suffer the anguish of not knowing where they are, in what conditions they are or even if they are still alive. This is the case of Carlos Brenes, Salvadora del Socorro Martínez Aburto or my goddaughter Ricardo Mendoza Irigoyen. That is why I will not tire of demanding that the regime reveal the whereabouts of all political prisoners and release them immediately. But there's something else we can do: It is high time for the democratic clause of the Association Agreement to be activated. We cannot maintain this Agreement as long as repression exists. Nicaragua deserves a future of peace and also of freedom.
