European Citizens' Initiative "Stop Finning – Stop the trade" (debate)
Mr President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, Worldwide, an estimated 100 million sharks are caught and killed each year. The trade in shark fins is booming, although their consumption would actually be discouraged due to the high mercury content. The EU in particular has an increasing share in this deadly trade. Massive overfishing in recent decades has led to a catastrophic 71% decline in stocks. Biodiversity is declining and the functioning of marine ecosystems is in grave danger. If the EU wants to comply with its international obligations, there is no other way than to completely ban the trade in shark fins. More than 1.1 million EU citizens are behind this concern. For these 1.1 million citizens I speak today: Stop Finning – Stop the Trade!
