Time for European economic independence (debate)
Mr President, Commissioner, the truth is that the time is opportune to have this debate and the need is demanding, because there is no better way to ensure the strategic autonomy of our economy than, without a doubt, to consolidate the single market. We talk about the shadow tariffs that we still suffer: around 40%-60% for trade in goods, more than 100% for trade in services – guarismos estimated by the Monetary Fund or the European Central Bank. We want to boost our industry, we want to build, make it easier for European champions to grow; But we cannot do that if we do not have an efficient single market. That is why, Commissioner, you have a tremendous challenge in your portfolio. We are seeing how this Commission is pushing forward timely industrial policies in steel, in automobiles, in many sectors. But to be successful we need to consolidate the single market.
