The resilience of the European transport sector and the need to ensure the supply of essential goods amid ongoing geopolitical instability (debate)
Mr President, companies and colleagues complaining about the ongoing trade disruptions are quickly blaming Iran. What a nonsense to point the finger at a country that defends itself against an illegal war by the US and Israel. But the Strait of Hormuz has shown the world how vulnerable our supply chains are. Railway infrastructure that has deteriorated due to lack of funding, transport services that have been spoiled to private companies, important production that has been freshened abroad. Our governments leave ownership and management of key supply chains entirely to the total arbitrariness of private companies. And everyone knows: If profit is the main goal rather than the public interest, then surely it is no wonder that we are not able to adequately respond to emergencies? Militarism and subsidies are not solutions to the dismantling of states and their responsibilities. Instead of fuelling conflict, we need to focus on what states can do better: investing in public transport infrastructure, industry, decarbonisation and clean energy. And above all: create good permanent jobs that can guarantee our people a perspective and above all a dignified life.
