Political prisoners in Nicaragua – the cases of Carlos Brenes, Salvadora del Socorro Martínez Aburto and Brooklyn Rivera
Mr President, Commissioner, I sometimes have the feeling that in Europe we have perfected the art of indignation without consequences. We pass resolutions, make statements and express our deep concern, while in Nicaragua political prisoners remain in prison, opponents disappear and Brooklyn Rivera has died in the regime's custody. The question is no longer whether the Ortega y Murillo regime is a dictatorship, which it is, we all know that. The question is whether we are willing to act as if we really believe it. Because there is a democratic clause in our agreement with Nicaragua and it is precisely for these situations, not for good morning, nor for when everything works well, but for when the regime systematically violates human rights. Human rights cannot become a ceremonial discourse that we say on Thursdays and forget on Fridays. Out of respect for the victims, for the credibility of the European Union, the time has come to activate the democratic clause, because if not now, when?
