Circularity requirements for vehicle design and management of end-of-life vehicles (debate)
Madam President, Commissioner, dear colleagues, the circularity needed for strategic autonomy will be boosted by introducing targets for recycled materials, circular design, information freely shared in the ecosystem, and mandatory removal of certain parts. This regulation is not only about waste management. It is about competitiveness, innovation and strategic resilience. By ensuring that design requirements are realistic, the obligations are proportionate and the internal market remains strong, we support an automotive sector that is able to innovate, invest and compete globally. One more idea. Autonomous vehicles are the true face of future automotive. But autonomous driving could change the whole culture of automotive. In this new world, one more trend could be very common: compatibility, interoperability. With this regulation, we introduce circularity design. I predict our next step: I'd like to have a small, affordable European car. But we are going to have a variety of different small, affordable European cars. What I would like to see in the European market, in the made-in-Europe market, is compatibility, standardisation, to be large and competitive. I would like to see the Lego principle, when at least some parts of one model and brand would fit the other vehicle which is more compatible. We'd have lower maintenance costs, more spare parts, easier and faster shipments, faster and better repair. Hence, such compatible vehicles would be globally more competitive. Let's do it together. We did our best to negotiate the harmonised and balanced approach, taking into account all the relevant market players. I count on your support in the vote. Thank you, dear colleagues, for all your work.
