Protecting children’s safety and mental health from the risks posed by social media – our duty to act now (debate)
Madam President, Lyhanna was 11 years old. She was killed by a paedocriminal who had already been reported by several victims, but who was never summoned or charged by the courts. The murderer was also acting online. Behind the screens lies harassment, sexual predation, hypersexualisation and algorithms that lock the youngest into destructive spirals. But let us also have the courage to look at ideological responsibilities: A part of the political and intellectual left has long maintained a dangerous complacency with theories relativizing the boundaries of sexuality between adults and children, this must not be forgotten or minimized. Recently, the scandals of the Parisian extracurricular have revealed serious excesses, with recruitments without control, dozens of reports ignored by the socialist majority of the City of Paris. Result: Hundreds and perhaps even thousands of victims. Our duty is clear: systematic verification of persons in contact with minors, enhanced responsibility of digital platforms, effective parental control, zero tolerance towards predators, and above all – most importantly! – relentless judicial proceedings and exemplary penalties.
