Maybe because it's okay that there are those who earn and make extra profits like that and in the meantime people pay very high bills. Our role in Parliament is to make electricity affordable. This means lowering taxes on electricity, which is not possible to be higher than those on gas. This means more renewables. This means more efficient networks. This means working for people and not for the pockets of fossil companies.

High time to deliver on the Single Market, providing certainty and predictability for EU businesses and quality jobs (continuation of debate)

Madam President, ladies and gentlemen, the single market: How many times do we repeat this word in our speeches? The single market as a major achievement of the Union. But what is a single market without a single set of rights, without fiscal alignments, without a single energy price, without equal protections for workers? A strong single market is not built on precariousness or social dumping, it is built on quality work, fair wages, decent conditions and clear rules for all. The single market and competitiveness must be the means, not the end, of achieving social justice. We are therefore starting to protect in the same way those who work in each Member State, for example by restricting subcontracting to combat exploitation, banning unpaid traineeships, and providing the right public support for care work. We must fight for a just employment of the whole population, therefore including women, young people, migrants. It must be the means to get quickly to the ecological transition, accelerate with the development of renewables and therefore lower the price of energy to allow our families to pay their bills. It must be the means to increase our autonomy, for an industry that can produce batteries, solar panels, heat pumps, steel – in short, what we need for the transition – but also an industry that can innovate, looking at digital and artificial intelligence, and can be autonomous. The single market must serve Europe and our people, not those who want to use it to maximise their profits.

In Spain five men repeatedly raped a woman and by two degrees of judgment there was no rape because there was no explicit resistance. In Italy, the Court of Cassation has annulled a rape sentence because jeans that are too tight cannot be removed without the cooperation of the woman. Well, then I say to my colleagues who have said that there is a need for dissent: These are the people who do not see justice, because you do not want to give it to them! Because when we talk about dissent, we are not considering all the situations in which that dissent cannot be given. And so if you put dissent at the heart of the legislation – as you are doing in Italy – you are taking justice away from women, you are taking justice away from victims. You're telling all these thousands of raped people that they don't deserve our protection. Europe's competence is to protect its people in all Member States in the same way: Because only yes means yes!

We can never build peace if we depend on the fossils that drive wars, and as long as our energy system depends on importing gas and oil, our bills will be affected by global crises and market instability. In ten days the price of electricity in Italy has increased by more than 60%: So bills triple, double, and the cost of living, with them. The cost of energy can only be reduced with more renewables, more energy efficiency, isolated homes and allowing citizens to produce and share energy through energy communities. So prices fall and the economic, social and environmental benefits remain in the community. With more renewable energy than the citizen, we could finally also oppose the imperialist cravings of Putin and Trump who are trying to grab every fossil resource on the planet. But, all this, we had to have already done. In Italy, for example, we had to have five gigawatts of energy communities by 2030 and we are still at 50 megawatts. This package, Commissioner, should tell us that we no longer have time today.
