Preparation of the European Council (joint debate)
Mr President, Commissioner, a single market, a single defence and unique rules, there is no other way. But we need to go faster and further. We must lead, not manage decay. Either we do it now or, as Draghi warned, the agony will be slow and painful. We must move in three directions. First: the economic one, accelerating the single market, opening highways to talent, to investment, to innovation, to rebalance the global balance. It's not just trade, it's power and geopolitics. Second: security. The European Defence Union is not an ideological choice, it is survival. Ukraine is showing that Russia can be defeated, but Putin will be more dangerous the weaker he feels. And Romania is the alarm that some still do not hear. We must continue to learn from Kiev and advance its Europeanisation. And third: consistency. If the European Union wants to be respected outside, it must be respected inside. Spain, the fourth economy, is a country ravaged by corruption that has roamed without budgets for three years, fails to comply with defense commitments, tramples on rulings on the rule of law, does business with enemies who compromise our security and challenges Brussels with a massive and legal regularization, just when we approved the Pact on Migration and Asylum. Faced with this, the Commission cannot remain silent because millions of Spaniards are wondering what else has to happen. Has the Commission not learned the lessons of Orbán's Hungary? Ladies and gentlemen of the Commission, without political authority there is no public trust. And without trust we will continue...
