The role of the EU in efforts for peace and stability throughout the Middle East after the announced deal between the US and Iran (debate)
Madam President, Mrs Kallas, in international politics it is not the one who bombs the most who wins, but the one who achieves his objectives. In the agreement between the United States and Iran there are two great defeats: Israel and Europe. Israel, because it has not achieved any of its objectives. The regime of the Ayatollahs has been strengthened and what the United States has achieved is less than Tehran was willing to give before. That is why he is trying to sabotage the agreement in Lebanon. Europe has lost because it has demonstrated its irrelevance, because it has lost its autonomy and has subordinated itself to the United States. It has suffered the consequences of war in instability, in inflation, in worse relation to the Arab world, to the Global South. And, unlike in the past, when he did have an international initiative and achieved the 2025 nuclear agreement, he has now disappeared, he has not been at the negotiating tables, Trump has not called us. We would have to follow the path of the Government of Spain: bet on diplomacy, international law and de-escalation and not on the irrelevance to which the European Union dominated by the right has led us.
