The state of play of advancing EU-Africa trade and investment relations (debate)
Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, Commissioner, as a Dutch national I am naturally frugal. I'm cycling, I'm taking my coffee and I'm waiting for the sale. But even I say: Don't cut back on Africa! Our neighbours will be the largest market in the world in a few decades' time. But with a foreign budget at risk of shrinking by 40%, Europe is letting that opportunity slip through its fingers. For ou…

The threat of war crimes, the escalating violations of international humanitarian law and the human rights situation in El-Obeid, Sudan
Mr President, Commissioner, colleagues, starvation, rape, enforced disappearances and torture as weapons of war. Thousands have been killed and many more have been forced to flee their homes. This is what the world was witnessing in El Fasher just months ago. Today, the people of El‑Obeid face the same horrific fate. For months, the RSF siege entrapped half a million men, women and children. Drone…

Harnessing the potential of a competitive and sustainable EU Bioeconomy Strategy for EU strategic autonomy (debate)
Mr President, dear Commissioners, dear colleagues, the next breakthrough that could save lives, or make plants climate resilient, or make us produce chemicals or plastics on large scales without fossil fuels, all these breakthroughs – they could come from Europe. The question is, will it? Will it be developed and produced in Europe? Europe has it all. Europe has the knowledge, has the talent, has …

Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda: EU solidarity and preparedness in global health (debate)
Madam President, dear colleagues, dear Commissioner, one in three people does not survive Ebola. And recently the first case in France was detected. This outbreak should remind us that infectious diseases do not stop at borders. It demonstrates the need for a resilient health system worldwide. Despite declining international help, African countries are, little by little, strengthening their own he…

2025 Commission report on Ukraine (debate)
Mr President, it is easy to promise Ukraine a future in Europe. The question is: How will we, together with Ukraine, deliver on this promise? Ukraine is a country at war. This is precisely why the accession process calls for urgency. We need Ukraine for our security. At the same time, the accession process must be carefully conducted in order to ensure the stability of Europe. Ukraine is not an av…

The role of the EU in efforts for peace and stability throughout the Middle East after the announced deal between the US and Iran (debate)
Mr President, whoever refuels at the pump notices it and at the checkout we also feel it: high prices due to the crisis in the Middle East. The announced ceasefire does not put an end to this. The situation remains fragile. As an EU, we cannot stay on the sidelines. The consequences are many times greater than just our prices at the checkout. We need to learn from this situation and we need to cla…

Situation of women and girls in Afghanistan following the Taliban's adoption of the Criminal Procedure Code for Courts
You have to sell your children to survive. That is the reality of fathers and mothers in Afghanistan. Three out of four Afghans are no longer able to meet their basic needs. There is a risk of famine for nearly 5 million people. Women and girls pay the highest price for this. Daughters are married off so that a family has something to eat. Child marriages are on the rise. Access to education for g…

Europe's response to reduced US military deployments in Europe, particularly at its Eastern flank in the light of the latest US decisions (debate)
President, ‘if you’re not at the table, you’re probably on the menu’. That's what Mark Carney said. Some people in Europe fear that we ourselves are now on the menu. But the opposite is true. A stronger Europe also makes the alliance stronger. True partners must be able to stand on their own feet. The reduction of American troops shows that Europe must take more responsibility for its own security…

European solidarity: key to securing medicine access in a shifting geopolitical era (debate)
Mr President, colleagues, medicines are not luxury products. They are not sweets. They're not something you can decide to buy or not to buy. For patients, medicines are a necessity. Often they are the difference between suffering and recovery. The difference between life and death. That is why this debate matters. The global medicine market is changing rapidly, and decisions taken outside Europe, …

Global Gateway – past impacts and future orientation (debate)
Mr President, today we are talking about the Global Gateway. Let me be clear: this is not an abstract policy instrument, but an opportunity to make Europe stronger, fairer and more future-proof. As a member of the EPP ‑ Group, I believe in what we in the Netherlands call fair earning capacity: economic growth that not only generates profits, but also creates added value for our society. Invest…

Implementation of the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (UWWTD) and risks to the security of supply of medicines (debate)
The Netherlands is in a delta. As a result, we know better than anyone what it means to live with water, to keep water clean. Let me start with a very simple example: the Reinier de Graaf‑ Hospital in Delft. It has built its own water treatment plant. The water is then reused in the hospital and the drug residues are removed and properly processed. What doesn't get into the water, we don't…

Situation in Northeast Syria, the violence against civilians and the need to maintain a sustainable ceasefire (debate)
Mr President, dear colleagues, north-eastern Syria is once again descending into violence, and civilians are paying the price. Since early January, clashes between government forces and the Syrian Democratic Forces have spread from Aleppo towards Raqqa, al-Hasakeh and Deir-ez-Zor. The consequences are devastating – hundreds of thousands without electricity, water or food, over 170 000 people displ…

Framework for strengthening the availability and security of supply of critical medicinal products as well as the availability of, and accessibility of, medicinal products of common interest (debate)
Mr President, imagine: Your child is sick. The diagnosis and treatment are clear, but there is a lack of medicines. You really don't want to experience that uncertainty. Unfortunately, this is happening more and more often in Europe. Our supply of medicines has become too dependent on countries outside Europe. Moreover, this risk is increasing in a world with increasing tensions, increased trade c…

Impact of the geopolitical situation on European patients and their access to medicines (debate)
Mr President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, access to medicines is not a luxury. It is a basic condition of our health. In recent years, we have shown how vulnerable that access can be due to serious shortages of necessary medicines in our pharmacies. Geopolitical tensions, disrupted trade routes and dependencies outside Europe have direct consequences for people who rely on their medicines …

Escalation of the war and the humanitarian catastrophe in Sudan (continuation of debate)
Madam President, 21.2 million people face acute hunger. 12 million people are on the run. The UN named Sudan the biggest humanitarian crisis. This is not a moment to step down our humanitarian commitment to Sudan, but is the moment to increase EU commitment to the region. The war in Sudan has a potential destabilisation effect on the entire region: the Horn of Africa, the Sahel, but could also pot…

UN Climate Change Conference 2025 in Belém, Brazil (COP30) (debate)
Mr President, the message from climate scientists is clear. Climate change will hit us hard in the coming decades. That requires us to be honest about what needs to be done, but also hopeful about what can be done. The challenge of climate change lies not only in money or willingness, but also in implementation. The transition to a sustainable world requires clear political choices. That means amb…
