2025 Commission report on Türkiye (debate)
Madam President, Commissioner, Turkey is an important partner of the Allied Union in neighbouring NATO, with which we cooperate on trade, security and migration. A relationship of shared interest in mutual respect. I sincerely welcome the European aspiration of our Turkish interlocutors. She's real. We know, however, that for some of them, Europe is first and foremost seen from an economic perspective. However, our Union is above all a community of values and it is on this foundation that membership is based. But this is not the path that the government authorities are giving priority to today. In light of recent developments and the unresolved situation in Cyprus, the conditions for a resumption of negotiations that have been stalled since 2018 are simply not met. Let's look at the facts. The CHP congresses cancelled, the mayor of Istanbul Ekrem İmamoğlu imprisoned, Osman Kavala detained in defiance of the European Court of Human Rights, an intimidated press, the withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention, these are not incidents, this is a trajectory. Yes to dialogue, yes to a demanding partnership. But the European aspiration must be translated into action, faithful to the values of our liberal democracies. Thank you and thank you also for the good cooperation with the rapporteur, Mr Sánchez Amor.
