2025 Commission report on Türkiye (debate)
Madam President, Mr Sánchez, we sincerely thank you for your effort to present a balanced report on the Union's relations with Turkey. The report contains many truths, but in the end it chews them. This is the familiar tactics of the European Union. References to the Cyprus issue, to the bizonal bicommunal federation, to the rejection of the two-state solution, to the return of Famagusta, to the missing persons, to the end of the assimilation of Turkish Cypriots by Turkey, to the resumption of negotiations from the point where they were interrupted, are important. At the same time, however, Erdoğan's Turkey is sliding towards dictatorship. Democratic backsliding, non-existent rule of law, arrests, imprisonments, abolition of mayors, provocations in the Eastern Mediterranean. This is where the paradoxes begin. Turkey is seen as an important strategic partner. It is already offered the following: participation in SAFE, high political dialogues, visas, the European Investment Bank that went to Turkey, upgrading the customs union. Defense and supposed security, armaments and economic interests outweigh political morality. Let Turkey get out of Europe. But it must also give: democracy to its citizens, respect for its neighbours and international law and above all a solution to the Cyprus problem in a just and viable solution for the benefit of all Cypriots. Now is the time for the European Union to assist in one of the latest efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem. Before the bells of the final partition ring.
