Empowering the Single Market to deliver a sustainable future and prosperity for all EU citizens (debate)

I think that the European Parliament should share and support the strategy of the Letta report to modernise the EU single market. I particularly agree that, if we want the single market to really improve people's lives, it must have a soul that is social dialogue, which must involve and involve people, society, intermediate social bodies, workers' and business unions, relaunching social dialogue a…

EU strategies for islands, coastal communities and outermost regions (debate)

Watch

Certainly the mountain communities also deserve the utmost attention. I also talked about "inland areas". We consider that our islands also have mountain communities. I think of the communes of the Madonie: Petralia Soprana reaches 1 200 meters high, it is an isolated community that lives two hours away, if everything goes well, if there is no snow, if the road is passable, from the capital city o…

EU strategies for islands, coastal communities and outermost regions (debate)

Watch

Thanks for the question. I think so. I think that Sicily or the islands of Croatia live a different condition from islands like the Azores or like, of course, the Canary Islands, but they still live a different condition than Lombardy or Alsace. So, you have to find a middle ground. That is why I also want regulatory action and, above all, for the Member States to take this particularity into acco…

EU strategies for islands, coastal communities and outermost regions (debate)

Watch

Madam President, ladies and gentlemen, Mr Vice-President, islands and coastal communities are an essential and indispensable part of our Europe. We therefore welcome the Commission's new development strategies. Now we need a new regulatory package, because Sardinia and Sicily have problems other than Alsace, for example of territorial continuity, and we also need resources, under the new financial…

Recent violent and fatal attacks in Italy and Denmark and their implications for public security in Europe (debate)

Watch

(IT) Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, the issue of public security in Europe certainly deserves the greatest attention and is a major emergency in some areas of my country – Italy – in particular as regards the fight against organised crime and the mafias, which are still strong and present on the ground. My region is Sicily, the land of Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, of many women and …

The resilience of the European transport sector and the need to ensure the supply of essential goods amid ongoing geopolitical instability (debate)

Watch

Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, the current geopolitical and energy crisis must push the European Union to accelerate the transition of the transport system. It is urgent to improve transport and air, sea, road and rail connections of the islands, such as Sardinia and Sicily. There is an urgent need to electrify the islands' rail networks to reduce costs and pollution. It is no longer acceptab…

The impact of the implementation of the Maritime Spatial Planning Directive 2014/89/EU on fisheries in selected fishing areas and sea basins (debate)

Watch

Mr President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, maritime space is a precious resource that must be valued in the best, smartest and most sustainable way. Better cross-border coordination is needed. The main problem is the growing competition for marine space between fishing and aquaculture, offshore wind, protected areas, maritime traffic and other uses. Fishing and aquaculture are at risk of be…

Mr President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, the Fisheries Control Agency has acted fairly, playing an essential role for Europe: ensure that the rules on fishing in our seas are respected by all. Through its activities of coordination, control and support to Member States, the Agency contributes every day to ensuring a level playing field among fishermen and to strengthening trust in the Eur…

Interim report on the proposal for the multiannual financial framework for 2028-2034 (debate)

Watch

Mr President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, the financial framework 28-34 will define the investment of European resources for the Europe we want, of which David Sassoli spoke. That is why Parliament is calling for an increase of at least 10%. Funding for the new priorities cannot come at the expense of cohesion, agriculture, fisheries and social spending, but must be financed from own resou…

The role of ocean diplomacy for the competitiveness of EU fisheries and aquaculture (debate)

Watch

Madam President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, this report on ocean diplomacy touches on a strategic priority for the Union: the future of fisheries in our coastal communities. From the Mediterranean – I am thinking in particular of Italy, island regions such as Sicily and Sardinia – we see every day the difficulties faced by fishermen, caught between rising costs and unfair competition. To …

Madam President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, lack of physical activity is one of the main causes of obesity for our young people. Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, Commissioner, the proposal for a multiannual budget for 2028-2034 is not adequate to meet the priorities and challenges of the European Union. Workers' and entrepreneurs' associations and regions do not like it. Alleged misuse of EU funds by Members of the far-right and measures to ensure institutional integrity (debate)

(IT) Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, the comments that have emerged about the use of around EUR 4 million by the far-right group ID, which is now dissolved, raise questions that need to be clarified - we hope soon - and that require answers to be given to citizens about the use of European public funds.
