Protecting bees: advancing the EU's New Deal for Pollinators (debate)
Bees are an indispensable element of our ecosystem. Over 75% of the main crops in Europe depend directly on their pollination. Without bees, there is no food, no biodiversity, no sustainable agriculture. And yet the bees disappear. The reasons are clear: pesticides, climate change, disease, habitat loss. We have enough scientific evidence and alarming signals from beekeepers across the Union. We can no longer afford to be inactive. Immediate and decisive action is needed. The European Commission must speed up the establishment of the European Reference Laboratory for Pesticides, introduce stricter restrictions on substances harmful to pollinators and provide targeted support for sustainable agriculture that coexists with beekeeping. It is equally important to ensure real and easier access to funding for beekeepers - especially in less developed regions. They are the basis of European beekeeping, but too often fall outside the scope of the strategic instruments of the Common Agricultural Policy. This needs to change - with targeted measures, simplified procedures and better involvement of the sector in policy planning and implementation. Protecting bees means protecting our future.
