Situation in Lebanon: implementation of the ceasefire, support peace efforts and humanitarian access (debate)
Mr President, our mission as the European Union is clear. We need to help Lebanon with the face of reconstruction, peace and prosperity, especially for the Lebanese people. That should be our duty. Lebanon's Government is demonstrating strength and unity. It has taken a firm stance against Hezbollah. Most importantly, many Lebanese citizens are also voicing their opposition. Particularly among the Sunni and Christian populations, there is a growing resistance to Hezbollah's presence. But Hezbollah is seeking to rebuild its capabilities, with Iranian financial support likely to resume. This risks undermining efforts to demilitarise southern Lebanon and threatens the already fragile ceasefire. We need to immediately support the Lebanese armed forces and help them to disarm, for once and for all, Hezbollah. Our security – Europe's security – depends on it. Let's think about the Lebanese people, not about the association agreements and so on – just about the Lebanese people.
