Recent proposals to fight poverty in the EU (debate)
Madam President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, the war to come is not the first, wrote Bertolt Brecht in 1939, before there were other wars. At the end of the last one there were winners and losers. Among the vanquished, the poor people were hungry, among the victors the poor people were hungry, too. It's still like that, it's always like that. The international scenario of war and crisis is impoverishing the population here too, while someone else becomes even richer. The European arms industry, for example, increased revenues by 13% in 2024. So, while there are more than a million homeless people in Europe, someone else is buying his tenth beach house thanks to the extra profits of the war, that is, thanks to the fact that other human beings are killed from Ukraine to Lebanon, passing through Gaza. And here we have an action plan, dear Commissioner, but without new resources. But a resourceless action plan risks being just a piece of paper. Where can we find these resources? We begin to tax heavily the extra profits of the arms sector, for example, energy, oil. Let's go ahead by taxing the big multinationals of the digital space in the right way. Let's take that money out of the pockets of those who are already millionaires and use it for the poor people who are starving, among the vanquished and among the winners.
