How to secure a sustainable future for the EU livestock sector in light of the need to ensure food security, farmers’ resilience and the challenges posed by animal diseases? (debate)
Mr President, there is one topic that is rarely discussed in this House – a natural resource that remains underused despite its clear economic and environmental value. And that is wool. Legal barriers to handling, marketing and exporting wool are preventing farmers from using it effectively or restoring its value. Across Europe, particularly in Ireland, the wool industry has nearly disappeared, and prices have fallen so low that farmers no longer can cover the cost of shearing. As a result, wool is piling up on farms – unused, undervalued and treated as a waste. This is a narrative we so desperately need to change. Commissioner, while not in your direct wheelhouse, I ask your support in removing regulatory barriers within the outdated animal by-product rules so farmers – particularly our sheep farmers – can access practical, workable solutions. In Ireland and across Europe, we understand the value of what we produce and this has to be reflected. Our sheep sector has to be respected in our upcoming CAP. Wool is certainly not a waste and it's time our policies reflect that also.
