Reviewing the ETS system to support European competitiveness (topical debate)
Madam President, Europe needs a serious climate policy, but it must not punish. It should not penalise European industry, workers and energy security. The carbon trading system has contributed to reducing emissions, but European companies today pay 2-3 times more for electricity than the United States of America. This puts at risk strategic sectors such as steel, chemical industry, energy. For countries like Bulgaria, the transition must remain realistic and balanced. Bulgaria cannot afford to lose baseload capacity and weaken its energy independence. Part of the coal-fired power plants must be preserved as a strategic reserve that guarantees a secure supply to citizens and industry. Renewable energy must be developed wisely and without risk to grid stability. Europe needs a green transition, but based on common sense, a transition that preserves Europe's industry and jobs. A transition that protects national energy security and allows each Member State to choose a balanced energy mix according to its political need.
