Rights, support and protection of victims of crime (debate)
Dear Sir/Madam, This directive is an important step forward because it finally strengthens the protection of victims, access to psychological assistance, the protection of privacy and the prevention of secondary victimisation – I will repeat – at last. But I'm afraid I have something else to say. Some in this Chamber very much like to talk about the protection of victims until the victim also demands autonomy, his own right, his own decision, his own life after violence, after rape. Then, suddenly, we are again in the ideology and political interpretation of rights. Do you know – you can’t talk about the dignity of victims if you don’t trust women after trauma to decide their own lives. Secondary victimisation does not only occur in police stations or courts. Sometimes it also happens here, when the trauma of the victim turns into an ideological battlefield. Colleagues, colleagues. The European Union must not be a place where victims fear the system more than the perpetrator. We don't protect our victims by moralizing them. We protect them by believing in them. Thank you.
