Action Plan for the Automotive Industry (debate)
The European automotive industry is at a crucial moment of transition. In the face of increasing global competition and the challenges of digitalisation and sustainability, our regulation must support innovation, not block it. First of all, access to data from vehicle systems must be regulated in a manner adapted to the specifics of the automotive industry. Placing these provisions only in the Data Act is not enough – we need sector-specific legislation. The absence of such regulation risks legal uncertainty and delays that will undermine the competitiveness of European industry. Secondly, the rules on the placing in service of vehicles should be dynamic and adapted to the pace of technological development. Constantly updating the requirements will ensure the safe implementation of new solutions and avoid that innovation is blocked by outdated regulations. Thirdly, we must support the re-production and re-use of components. Appropriate regulations should promote local production, which will translate into greater independence of European industry. It is also crucial to create a legal framework that facilitates the repair of batteries and the development of engine technology, and to invest in the training of workers. A strong European automotive industry is the future of our economy. We need effective legislation now, not in the long run.
