Presentation of the Fertilisers Action Plan (debate)
Madam President, it's urgent. The renewal of fertiliser delivery contracts for the rest of the year and the 2027 marketing year has become a real headache. In the longer term, more robust responses will be needed to reduce the EU’s vulnerability in this area, not just in the area of fertilisers on which Europe depends. To put it bluntly, when it comes to the structural dependence of European agriculture, I would like to use two metaphors. As regards nitrogenous matter, including soybeans, European cows graze on the plains of the Río de la Plata. And on the other hand, what grows our cereals is in the basement of the deserts of the Middle East, in particular. Mindful of the importance of working on long-term security of supply, could the Commission please explain to me how it intends to use the Global Gateway to secure our fertiliser deliveries, as long as we are not able to produce them ourselves? As for the development of fertiliser production capacity in the European Union, it is our entire policy of industrialisation that we must rethink in the face of a United States that no longer wants us and a China that wants to stifle us industrially. What gives us hope is what the Commissioner for Agriculture tells us.
