The multiannual plan for the Baltic Sea and ways forward (debate)
Mr President, Commissioner, restoring the ecosystem in the Baltic Sea is complex, but also important, in order to make fishermen and coastal communities more resilient. An integrated approach to fisheries and the area is needed. Account must be taken of the social, cultural and economic value of fisheries, the importance of fisheries for the food system and a future perspective for the sector. Not only mass-oriented, but also small-scale and area-oriented. Not only sharing space, but also sharing space with functions suitable for fishing. Cooperation. In coastal areas, fishing is the basis for the livelihood and identity of thousands of families. That makes working together on a good ecosystem extremely important. Behind every fishing port, everywhere in the European Union, are families, traditions and communities that depend on a living sea.
