European Citizens’ Initiative ‘Stop destroying videogames’ (debate)
Madam President, Commissioner! Dear colleagues! One thing in advance: I am not one of the 41 million Germans who regularly gamble, i.e. play video games. I have a lot of sympathy for this initiative. Anyone who purchases a license for a video game must be able to rely on the fact that they can basically play this game for as long as they want. After all, anyone who buys a book does not have to expect that the publisher will remove the book from the shelf after a few years. If the manufacturer of a video game can decide at its own discretion when to shut down the servers and thus end the enjoyment of the game, then the result would be that ultimately the customer would have to bear the risk of the economic success or failure of that game. This is manifestly incompatible with the principles of sound property and consumer protection. And that's why it's important to make sure that gamblers know what they're up to when they buy a video game.
