Reviewing the ETS system to support European competitiveness (topical debate)
Mr President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, yes, the EU must decarbonise, but please do not let it become deindustrialisation, with sectors and jobs disappearing. I advocate a certain sense of reality. The world has changed, the geopolitical context has changed. Talk to our companies and you'll hear the signals. I am thinking of Russia's war of aggression, which has increased energy prices. I am thinking of the competition between the United States and China, the consequences of which we bear. Our industry is suffering because this system is in danger of becoming unaffordable. I am in favour of the following: first, review the price of allowances; secondly, stop the rapid phasing out of free certificates; Finally, let the money flow back to the industry fairly. Let me give you an example: With us in Flanders, where I come from, EUR 600 million under the current system will not flow back enough in 2030 to give our companies the chance to make the transition.
