Advancing towards a care society: addressing the gender care gap (debate)
Madam President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, who cares for children, who accompanies an elderly or suffering parent, who puts his or her day in parentheses when a loved one needs help? In the majority of cases, it is still women, and this has a price on their career, on their salary and, later, on their retirement. With the aging of the population, the demand for care will increase sharply. We cannot meet them without accessible and quality services, and without truly attractive care professions. This requires a real upgrading of jobs, sustainable working conditions, and careers that make people want. Otherwise, we will continue to put the system on the same shoulders, and it is still women who will absorb the burden. Commissioner, I welcome the announcement of a care pact next year. Expectations are very high. Not everything will be decided here in Brussels, but we have a responsibility: create a framework, share best practices and look at what is already working on the ground and should be supported on a large scale.
