Recent devastating floods in Bosnia and Herzegovina (debate)
Increasingly unpredictable weather conditions have caused many natural disasters across Europe in recent years. A few weeks ago, Central and Eastern Europe had to face heavy flooding, triggered by heavy rainfall. Thanks to the government of Hungary and the cooperation of the Hungarian people, flood protection was successful and did not claim human lives besides material damage. The pictures we saw a few weeks ago in Eastern Europe can now be seen again in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Massive masses of water and landslides swept villages away and removed them from the surface of the earth. Unfortunately, the floods have also caused human casualties, and I would like to express my condolences to the families of the victims. We must assure Bosnia and Herzegovina of our support. I would therefore call on the European Commission to support, by all possible means, the rescue operations that take place there, and then and the reconstruction. The means of resolving such disasters and the material damage caused can slow down accession processes, and more needs to be done to increase the preparedness of candidate countries for such and similar natural hazards.
