Managing migration in an effective and holistic way through fostering returns (debate)
Hungary was the first Member State to draw attention to the danger and unsustainability of mass illegal migration already in 2015 and to propose solutions: there is an urgent need to strengthen external borders, assess applications outside Europe, cooperate with countries of origin and transit and effectively push backs. It is now clear to everyone that there is a migration crisis, but the outgoing Commission is still pushing for a misguided Migration Pact. Meanwhile, the leaders of an increasing number of European countries are protesting against the decisions taken in Brussels, demanding tougher measures and closing their borders, restricting one of the EU's most important achievements, the right to free movement of persons. Germany has introduced internal border controls, Poland has suspended EU migration rules, while the European Commission is imposing severe penalties on Hungary for protecting its external borders. Protecting borders is a legal obligation and a fundamental task. It must be said that forcing illegal migration threatens the Member States and undermines European cooperation. It is time to change the Migration Pact along the lines of common sense and to eliminate the penalties affecting Hungary!
