EU strategy in response to the ongoing Middle East crisis, its implications on energy prices and the availability of fertilizers (joint debate)
The EU today speaks about the consequences of the tragedy unfolding in the Middle East, about humanitarian suffering, displacement, and instability. But it remains strikingly silent about its root causes, the USA and Israeli illegal war against Iran. We are treating the symptoms while deliberately avoiding the diagnosis. We are witnessing a Union that does not dare to look reality in the eyes. A Union that lacks the political courage to clearly address the decades old destabilising role of Israel in the region. If we are unable to even articulate where responsibility lies, how can we claim to stand for international law and justice? Europe has shown clarity and unity with the illegal Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. We called the aggressor by its name. We have rightly defended international law and the sovereignty of a nation under attack. But today, faced with another grave crisis, we speak in generalities, carefully avoiding the truth. This selective approach exposes a dangerous double standard. And is hypocritical to our own fault. If we continue down this path, we risk something far greater than political inconsistency. We risk losing our morals and values the Union was founded on.We must not allow that to happen.
