Political repression and humanitarian situation in Cuba (debate)
Madam President, ladies and gentlemen, it is becoming almost daily, but the accumulation of savages against international law that the United States and others are perpetrating in recent times cannot lead us to turn our attention away from the fact that Trump is announcing an illegitimate intervention against Cuba. It is illegal because, once again, it would violate international law, but it is especially denounceable because the threat comes from a country – the United States – that for more than 60 years has imposed an economic blockade on Cuba, which has caused restrictions and economic and social precariousness that are not a consequence of the Cuban political system, but of that criminal blockade that threatens anyone who dares to have any relationship with the island. It is a great lie to refer to the situation in Cuba as if it were the consequence of a failed State, because this situation is provoked from outside Cuba, specifically from the United States. Mrs Kallas, Europe must rid itself of the dependence of the United States on international politics and act as a regional power with global aspirations; in this case, being in solidarity with Cuba and helping it to follow its own path.
