Advancing towards a care society: addressing the gender care gap (debate)
Mr President! Whether in childcare, care for the elderly, children with disabilities, it is still us, the women, who provide care. And no, the beautiful video on TikTok by Tradwives with several million followers – who are very well paid for it – cannot deceive us that this is not the reality. Millions of hours often unpaid and underpaid. On average, we women do 17 hours of unpaid care work per week. Instead of being reasonably remunerated for this indispensable work, women are effectively punished by the system: 25% pension gap, 10% employment gap. That is the consequence. The incentive for men to step in? Zero. In this report, we call for a paradigm shift, a time to recognize care work as a public good and to remunerate it sensibly. We need an EU ‑ for that.Care‑deal. We don't need to abuse the work that women do. We have to be paid for it, recognized. Migrants are at work here. Patriots abuse it for debate. We need access, legal access, care as a fundamental right and finally paid work.
