Conclusions of the special European Council meeting of 30-31 May 2022 (debate)

We Spanish socialists believe that when we act with solidarity and unity Europe advances. That is why we welcome the fact that at the last Summit the 27 adopted the sixth package of sanctions, despite the concessions imposed by some governments, because that is our best weapon to face the Putin threat and also to support Ukraine. Unfortunately, the Commission and the Council relegated to the background the social and economic consequences of this war that is affecting the daily lives of Europeans with the rising cost of living. That is why we Socialists are calling once again for the Council to reach an agreement on the migration pact, all the more so because the existing climate emergency and the food crisis indicate that migratory pressure is not likely to be mitigated. And that a dignified, solidarity-based and ambitious response be given to the demographic challenge through a tax on the profits fallen from the sky of electricity in a coordinated way, as requested by this Parliament.
