Need for an adaptation of the EU legal framework on sustainable biofuels (debate)
Mr President! Commissioner! Colleagues! Plate, trough, tank – this debate has been too one-sided in the past. As if one would completely exclude the other. But if we believe in innovation and progress, we also need to see if there can be an integrated use of these three pillars. Others are doing it. What's wrong with first extracting bioethanol from millet, for example, and then feeding it? And I believe that even in the case of overproduction, which we have in Europe and which we have on the market again and again and which burdens the market – that energy use can also be good there. What was the point of last season, for example, that we had far too many potatoes, some of which were not even harvested, so were left in the ground? It would have been much smarter to use them energetically. Therefore: We need this integration. And that's why we have to break down restrictions in RED III and not exacerbate them further. And that is why I believe that the delegated act presented in the Commission is going in the completely wrong direction. We are destroying soy value chains in Europe. And I think it is absurd if we write protein plans for this continent and at the same time prevent an energetic and meaningful use of soy. It seems that sometimes the right hand in the Commission does not know what the left hand is doing. It would be better if you knew that.
