Presentation of the Fertilisers Action Plan (debate)
Madam President, ladies and gentlemen, Our most important task must be to reduce the dependence on Lukashenka, Putin and the Gulf states for imports of fertilisers. That is the central task! Anyone who now calls for tariff cuts or the abolition of CBAM ultimately ruins the European fertiliser industry must be clear! We need to strengthen them, not weaken them! Switching to renewables in nitrogen production in the long term can be a way forward. What we also need, and I think we have a problem because some organic fertilisers are unevenly distributed in the EU – in some regions we have too much, in others too little: We need to better distribute organic fertilisers in the European Union. But I miss one thing, Commissioner, in your submission: We need agroecological measures. Growing legumes – field beans, peas, soya, alfalfa – on 10% of the land would really be a way to make our soils better, to bring in nitrogen and to farm sustainably. I don't understand one thing: How can we now come up with the idea of abolishing the Nitrates Directive? What does this have to do with it? That would be an absolute step backwards.
