Reviewing the ETS system to support European competitiveness (topical debate)
Madam President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, what poses a competitiveness problem for our businesses is not the price of carbon: It is the price of energy, the price of gas and the price of oil. And when I hear the representative of the Meloni government here in the European Parliament criticising the ETS system, when, if Italy is in a very important difficulty in terms of its industrial fabric and its competitiveness, it is precisely because Italy is the European country that imports the most gas to make electricity. It is the dependence on gas that creates the Italian problem, it has nothing to do with the ETS. When I hear Mr. Bardella and Mr. Bellamy criticize the ETS, when it is an electrification tool, a tool that serves French nuclear power, which they are supposed to want to defend, well, it is total nonsense. What we have to do is continue in our decarbonization, because that is what will allow us to reduce prices, to reduce our dependence. HTA is an essential tool for the climate, for our industry, for our sovereignty and for our freedom. Let's not change course.
