Global Gateway – past impacts and future orientation (debate)
Madam President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen. Nearly half of our foreign policy funding now goes to Global Gateway projects. And yes, the European Parliament wants us to succeed. We want – the House wants – this to become a central tool for shaping our international partnership and have a good future. What does it mean practically? The Global Gateway strategy needs to know what it stands for, what it is there for. The money for development policy in the European Union, as the Treaties say, is primarily used to combat poverty. For us, this means that education, health and, rightly so, sustainable value chains play a central role in our concrete actions. Europe wants to be a reliable partner. And we need reliable partnerships in the world. This also means that we have to be honest. Yes, we have interests, but others also have – legitimate interests. Millions of young people in the Global South want work, want employment. This must be our goal in our concrete projects, and we must be able to measure the successes. This Parliament stands ready as a partner – that is the message of this report – so that we can do it together. Thank you for the excellent report, the reporting by Mrs Ridel and Mrs Bentele. We will continue to develop the instrument.
