Droughts and extreme weather events as a threat to local communities and EU agriculture in times of climate change (debate)
The topic of droughts, floods and extreme weather events is extremely important, but unfortunately it is often overlooked by both the European institutions and national governments. In Bulgaria, for example, we are accustomed to thinking that we have an abundance of water resources. The real picture, however, is quite different. In recent years, water regimes have become more and more common. The reasons for which the experts are united are two - the large losses on the transmission network and the drought caused by climate change. In Bulgaria, losses are up to 70%, and changes are expressed in increasingly volatile seasonal patterns. According to the developed models, the risk of aridity affects our most fertile areas - the Thracian Plain, the Danube Plain, mostly in its eastern part, where the cities of Shumen, Varna and the granary of Bulgaria - Dobrich are located. I therefore call on the European Commission to take measures and create a financial mechanism to support countries in building infrastructure for water resource management. This would help reduce the effects of drought, extreme rainfall and allow a more efficient use of resources, both in households and in agriculture, where it has the strongest impact. Urgent measures are needed to ensure the drinking and necessary water for agriculture and business.
