The Union’s preparedness for and response to health emergencies: the case of the MV Hondius and the hantavirus warning (debate)
Madam President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, Europe, as the COVID ‑ pandemic19 has shown us, cannot afford to face the next health emergency with delays, fragmented responses or improvised interventions. Recent outbreaks of hantavirus and Ebola confirm that health threats can suddenly emerge, spread rapidly and put pressure on health systems, communities, workers and economies. While important progress has been made, the capacity to respond to health emergencies remains uneven. Strengthening the network of laboratories, improving data sharing, investing in qualified staff and consolidating coordination mechanisms between Member States are necessary to reduce response times and increase the effectiveness of future prevention and containment actions. Only in this way can Europe be close to its citizens.
