Advancing towards a care society: addressing the gender care gap (debate)
Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, when we talk about care, we are talking about invisible work, which in Europe still weighs heavily on women's shoulders. They are the ones who reduce working hours, interrupt careers or give up a promotion to look after children and the elderly. And they pay twice: today with lower wages, tomorrow with poorer pensions. But, let's be clear: It is not normal for women to replace, with their own time, a service that should be public and guaranteed. Care is a pillar of society, it is not a private affair to be unloaded on families. If we want a care society, we need investments, universal care services and fair leave. Because women's freedom also passes from here, from the right to no longer be considered the free welfare of our societies. We can and must change this model, because a society that dumps care on women is a more unjust and poorer society.
