Air passenger rights (debate)
Madam President, ladies and gentlemen, this House today strongly reiterates the fact that the European Parliament wants to protect passengers' rights. Meanwhile, the European Council, national governments, including the Italian government, oppose the fundamental points and defend almost exclusively the interests of airlines. Tomorrow we will vote on our proposal at second reading, which strengthens the rights of passengers, allowing them to board a trolley up to 100 centimeters free of charge, allowing people with disabilities to have an accompanying person at no additional cost by their side, reducing bureaucracy thanks to a pre-filled form to obtain reimbursement in case of delays or cancellations. The Council not only rejects these points, but even proposes – as Novakov said – a step backwards, to make the existing regulation worse, increasing the delay needed to obtain compensation from three to four hours. This is unacceptable to us. Governments should first of all protect the interests of European citizens and then those of airlines and not the other way around. Tomorrow, I am convinced, the European Parliament will express a strong unity and give us a clear mandate to start conciliation.
