High time to deliver on the Single Market, providing certainty and predictability for EU businesses and quality jobs (continuation of debate)
Madam President, thank you very much. And welcome here, Commissioner! 4000 tons of goods. This is what passes through the Port of Gothenburg every hour. 20% of Sweden's total foreign trade. 22,000 people work there. It is an extremely important port. When we talk about the single market, this is our front line. We have a homework to do in the EU, which is about improving regulations and making it easier for companies that want to take the step out of our ports. But we must not forget what is most important, what ensures that the market actually works. And it's the work that's done on the ground. What is done in the Port of Gothenburg and around ports in Europe. 2025 was a record year for e-commerce, but also for dangerous products. Swedish customs stopped 700,000 goods that did not meet Europe's requirements. Dangerous toys, toxic substances in makeup and electronics with a fire risk. We need to tighten control. Because if we do not have the flow of goods coming into the EU in order, then we do not have a fair playing field. Instead, we run the risk of serious companies and workers being knocked out by rogue companies around. If the single market is to work, then we must have control. That is why customs cooperation is extremely important.
