Recent proposals to fight poverty in the EU (debate)
Madam President, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, the region of the European Union is the best place to live, but today almost 95 million Europeans are still at risk of poverty or social exclusion. But there is one particularly worrying fact: in the European Union, around 20 million children are growing up in a context of vulnerability. This represents an immediate social risk, but also a major economic and demographic challenge for the future of Europe. The European response involves a strategy focused on valorising work, skills, affordable housing and better linking European funds, employment and territorial policies. Every euro invested in childhood, skills and professional integration reduces future costs in health, unemployment and exclusion. The European Social Fund+, the Child Guarantee and the European Pillar of Social Rights are decisive instruments, but the priority must now be to turn funding into a measurable impact on people’s lives.
