Continued financial and military support to Ukraine by EU Member States (debate)
Since 24 February 2022, the European Parliament has been united in its support for Ukraine. However, it is important that we maintain this trend for the next five years. I therefore welcome the strong signal of support that this resolution sends to our partners in Ukraine at the beginning of this mandate. Support for Ukraine does not exist in a vacuum. It is linked to the European and democratic future of Ukraine, which entered a new chapter in its European story when it started negotiating its accession to the Union. Military and financial support to Ukraine is an investment in the future of the Union and in our own security. It is a support for our neighbour, our partner and future member and ally. But we also need to talk in one breath about the reconstruction of Ukraine, whose economy and infrastructure are being destroyed by the Russian invasion. The only way to achieve Ukraine's sustainable and long-term development is to ensure that its reconstruction goes hand in hand with Ukraine's EU accession process. It is therefore also in the interest of our international partners and allies that reconstruction is in line with the needs of the accession process. This also opens up opportunities for the development of regions neighbouring Ukraine. The reconstruction of Ukraine must therefore be systematic, predictable and responsibly financed. I expect the European Parliament to be a supporting voice for both the reconstruction and the accession process of Ukraine to the EU.
