Global measures towards social media platforms - Strengthening the role of DSA and protecting democracy and freedom in the online sphere (debate)
In the digital age, social media platforms have transformed our societies, providing new opportunities for citizen participation, but also exposing significant risks to democracy and fundamental rights. The Digital Services Act (DSA) is a crucial step towards regulating these platforms, ensuring transparency, accountability and user protection. However, we must be even more ambitious. It is crucial to strengthen measures against disinformation, hate speech and election manipulation. Platforms must act proactively, ensuring that their algorithms do not promote harmful content that polarises our societies. In addition, we must protect freedom of expression by preventing content moderation from being used to silence critical voices or limit pluralism.
